ServiceNet Book Signing and Open House

Monday, November 18, 2013 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

ServiceNet welcomes Sara Elinoff Acker, author of Unclenching Our Fists: Abusive Men on the Journey to Nonviolence, to a book signing and open house featuring the Moving Forward program.  Ms. Acker has over 20 years of experience group leader in the MOVE (Men Overcoming Violence) batterer intervention program.  She is now in private practice as a psychotherapist.

MOVE maintains that people who act abusively are not bad people; rather, they engage in negative and, at times, very dangerous behaviors.  MOVE supports clients in achieving the fullest accountability possible.  Clients work toward developing an internal motivation to change because “compliance” does not increase victim safety, but merely teaches ways to hide abusive behaviors.  MOVE groups teach concrete skill development to reduce and eliminate controlling and abusive behaviors, examine false beliefs about power and masculinity, and confront patterns of denial, minimization and blame.

Moving Forward, which offers the MOVE program, joined ServiceNet in 2009 and serves approximately 180 people annually.  Meetings are conducted in Greenfield and at several other locations, including North Adams, Belchertown, Athol, Pittsfield, and Northampton.  Support is also offered to the partners of those enrolled in the program; one family member commented that the Moving Forward client “made some drastic changes and has really stepped up his responsibility and commitment to our family.”

The program recently moved to Federal Street in Greenfield and the new space offers plenty of room for meetings, staff offices, and a small library.  The open house begins at 4:00 p.m.  At 5:00, special guest speakers, versed in domestic violence and men’s issues, will share their insights.  Ms. Acker will discuss her book at 5:30 p.m.

ServiceNet is pleased to offer this uplifting gathering of hope and encouragement.  Please join us on November 18 at 55 Federal Street, Suite 115 in Greenfield, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.

For more information, contact the program’s director, Eve Bogdanove, at 413.587.9080 or ebogdanove@servicenet.org.
